ARTIFACTS (Pam Patterson and Leena Raudvee)

Toronto, Ontario

ARTIFACTS, formed in 1983 by Pam Patterson and Leena Raudvee, produces collaborative works which combine the sensibilities and concerns of art and theatre. It explores contemporary culture, looking at the myths, assumptions, and fantasies, and re-articulates them in a new context. The core of their work is informed by feminism, and women's issues and concerns. Performance art well suits this process, and while the performances may contain many personal and specific images and text, their intention is to investigate how women have been / are being formed, and to reveal attempts to negotiate this formation. The tension is between the personal and the formal, which raises questions as to the nature of feminist art practices and women's roles in society. In 2013 Miklos Legrady was invited to join ARTIFACTS in recognition of his role as documentary photographer whose physical presence within the performance as the public eye and silent witness takes on the role of a third performer.

Over the years this practice has focused on installation based performance art, but includes sound and video works. Recent performances include IN/VALID for the Centre for Women's Studies in Education at OISE, UofT, The Voyage Out for Buddies in Bad Times' Hysteria : A Festival of Women, and Passing, a site - specific performance for the 7a*11d International Performance Art Festival in Toronto. Other works have included Fragments, a performance created for the V.MacDonnell Gallery; Crossing the Street, for the Hamilton Artists Inc.; A Story, performed at the Euclid Theatre, Toronto, followed by a video version; Attending II, staged as part of the series Access to the Process at A Space Gallery; De-Tale (detail), presented for Roundup 89, also followed by an adaptation for video; Attending the Interior, performed at The Banff Centre; and Suburban Mirage, staged as part of the Danceworks series at Winchester Street Theatre, Toronto. Earlier works included performances in theatres, in the street, at the Theatre Centre and the Partisan Gallery.
