Andy Gamache

Winnipeg, Manitoba

Andy graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours degree.

Past works have explored challenging conceptual themes. Four Star (Gallery One One One, 2009) considered issues surrounding the re-contextualization of images, while exploring the interplay between media, photography, promotion and art. More than 200 restaurant review photos, conventional snapshots of smiling chefs and restaurateurs proudly displaying appetizing platters of food, originating from the Winnipeg Free Press were presented in Four Star.

Hot Pursuit (Toronto, 2005 and 2006), performed at various venues including the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, The Power Plant, the Art Gallery of Ontario and more), was a performance work featuring a custom-suited actor making the rounds as Andy at Toronto art events. Hot Pursuit explored the layers of separation between the artist and the gallery system and the forces behind the artist's creative decisions. The work probed personality and portraiture.

Scratch: A Winning Circle (solo exhibition, Plug In ICA, 2004) explored the cyclical relationship between gaming and the arts through the scratching of 3,000 lottery tickets by actors portraying the artist. Scratch also featured more than 260 photographs of 28 casinos on Las Vegas' famed gambling strip.

The CCCA Winnipeg Artists Project was generously supported by the Winnipeg Foundation.
