Wanda Koop

Winnipeg, Manitoba

Wanda was born in Vancouver and moved to Winnipeg as a young child. She graduated from the School of Art, University of Manitoba in 1973. Over the course of her career since, she has received numerous national and international awards, including a Canada Council “A” Grant; a Canada Council Paris Studio Residency; a Japan Fund Award; and a Manitoba Arts Council “A” Grant. In 2002 she was honoured with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal and received a Doctor of Letters from the University of Winnipeg. She was granted a second honorary doctorate from the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design in Vancouver in 2007, and the University of Manitoba awarded her a Doctor of Law in 2009. Wanda was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2005, and was appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 2006.

Koop travels extensively as part of her working process and has exhibited across Canada and the United States, as well as in Great Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, Brazil, Japan, India, China and Italy. Her work is included in numerous public and private collections including the National Gallery of Canada; the Winnipeg Art Gallery; the Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton; the Glenbow Museum, Calgary; the MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina; the Agnes Etherington Arts Centre, Kingston; the Hamilton Art Gallery; Musee d’art contemporain de Montreal; the Canada Council Art Bank, Ottawa; the Reykjavik Art Museum; and the Shanghai Museum of Art.

Wanda is an active and integral part of the Winnipeg arts community. She co-created the Rotterdam Apartment Cooperative in 1993 to help Canadian artists live and work in the Netherlands, with additional residencies in Canada for Dutch artists. In 1998, she founded Art City, a storefront art centre, whose goal is to bring together contemporary visual artists and inner-city youth to explore the creative process. Art City remains an integral part of Winnipeg’s cultural life.
