Gertrude Kearns

Toronto, Ontario

Gertrude has worked both officially and unofficially as a Canadian War Artist for over two decades. An independent, she is not currently affiliated with a commercial gallery. Completed 2006-2018 is ‘The ART of COMMAND: portraits + posters from Canada’s Afghan Mission’. Her most recent exhibitions were at Canadian Forces College, Toronto 2017-2018; Founders’ Gallery, U of Calgary, The Military Museums, 2016; Fort York Visitor Centre, 2015. Lecture to Toronto Friends of the Visual Arts, Canada 150 Lecture Series, 2017.

Kearns’ works are in private and institutional collections in Canada including The Beaverbrook Collection of War Art, Canadian War Museum, Ottawa; Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Collection; Department of National Defence; Royal Canadian Military Institute; Canadian Forces College, Toronto. In 2018-2019 Kearns embarked on a U.S. military project with General David Howell Petraeus as subject. A WIIS (Canada) documentary on her conflict work is in progress, due for U of T screening summer 2019. HYFUTEC with Hybrid CoE/ COI Strategy + Defence, Helsinki with Stratbyrd Consulting, Germany: content collaboration of Canadian Forces Art of Command in defence presentations and papers.
