Irene Avaalaaqiaq Tiktaalaaq

Avaalaaqiaq was born at Princess Mary Lake in 1941 and came to Baker Lake in 1959 to give birth to one of her children. Being an orphan and seeing very few people until she was about thirteen, her grandmother’s old stories loomed large in her imagination. They are the exclusive subject of her art.

Avaalaaqiaq worked full time as a printer, usually printing her own drawings. She is famous for her textiles as well as her drawings. The Isaacs/Innuit Gallery in Toronto mounted a solo exhibition of her wall hangings in 1972. Betty Ann Jordan suggests that she is the artist most interested in assuming the laurels of the talented Jessie Oonark, who died in 1985 (Jordan, 1994).
