Frank Mikuska

Winnipeg (Manitoba)
[Winnipeg (Manitoba), 1930]

Born in Winnipeg in 1930 of Slovak immigrant parents, Frank Mikuska grew up working-class in Point Douglas. Educated at Roman Catholic parochial schools, he entered the Winnipeg School of Art in 1947, and was at the School as it underwent the transition to becoming a division of the University of Manitoba in 1949-50. Frank was influenced by faculty member, William McCloy, whose use of encaustic impressed him, and by another member of the faculty, Richard Gadbois, a painter who introduced him to the creative and practical possibilities of graphic design.

After University, he began a career at Daley Display and Molen Printers where he was introduced to the use of inks used by commercial printers. In 1955 he joined the Graphics Department of the CBC’s just-opened television studio in Winnipeg, where he worked as a designer until 1992.

Frank has won several awards for his work and is represented in numerous public and private collections.
