An interview with Barbara Astman about her commission for the Calgary Winter Olympics '88. Barbara designed and installed a 1,300 square foot inlaid floor created for the Olympic Speed Skating Oval. The building had been designed but not yet completed prior to the art competition. The art floor leads into the 4,000 seating area for the spectators during events. The floor had to withstand a heavy traffic flow and all of the technical rigours of a public use floor, while maintaining an aesthetic and conceptual rigour. The design of the floor echos a heroic entrance and plays with perspective. It is contemporary yet maintains a sense of history throughout the design.
