Etching: printing

1. Ink is applied to the plate and worked into the etched lines or textures of the image.

2. The plate is then wiped with tarlatan to remove excess ink in the non-image areas without disturbing ink that has accumulated in the etched image. The surface is polished with newsprint.

3. The inked plate is placed on the press bed. Dampened paper is positioned over the plate. The paper is covered by heavy wool felts that help to cushion the pressure. The bed is run through the press.

4. The paper is removed from the plate and the printer inspects the etching.

5. Adding and subtracting information can be accomplished by burnishing, scraping, or re-coating the plate with a ground and immersing it in the acid again.
