Winnipeg-based artist Blair Marten is informed by conceptualism, feminism, philosophy and humour. Marten's most recent body of work in progress acknowledges an experimental treatment of basic archival procedures, re-presenting/re-molding everyday found materials as archival evidence (of structures of knowledge) and directing the viewer to meditate on his suggested symbols of oppression to minority groups. His objects are either abused looking throw-aways or equally ephemeral samples of packaging for toys. The hardship supposedly endured by his found materials is both humourous and suggestive of the constructed narrative and valuation process applied the archival presentation of any object. Lighting technology and the low tech energy circulating in his brain will be vital elements in his current work. - Plug In.
