Plug In ICA, 286 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Curator: Jon Tupper

This installation features nineteen works from Lum's extended series entitled Photo-Mirrors--large, silver mirrors with thick, dark walnut-coloured frames. Like their domestic counterparts, Lum's mirrors house personal photographs culled from the memories of people's lives. What results is the interruption of the surface of the mirrors by small chronicles of anonymous personal histories. In seeming opposition to each other, the mirrors reflect the reality of the present while the static photographs capture a single moment for eternity. The mirrors also capture the viewer in a hypnotic, self-contemplative gaze. The clever arrangement of the Photo-Mirrors reflects one into another, multiplying the observer's quiet contemplation across the exhibition space and drawing the observer back into social engagement.
