Ramsay's work addresses changing aspects of rural life. Her paintings are an ambivalent and bittersweet response to prairie life in the late 20th century, where economic depression has transformed pastoral solitude into desolation, loneliness and despair. "As an artist who lives in rural Manitoba, I love the solitude of it. At the same time, I'm saddened by the increasing isolation here. Small villages become ghost towns. Family farms are consumed by larger operations; all this at the whim of government and the weather. Using architectural imagery, I express in my paintings the ambivalent feelings I have for rural life as it is today." - Carol Ramsay
