Judy Chicago, The Dinner Party. Opening in 1979, at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Dinner Party has travelled throughout USA and Canada. Conceived by U.S. feminist artist Judy Chicago, and realized with the help of over 400 women and men, the exhibit consists of a triangular banquet table set for 39 great women drawn from Western history and mythology. The table stands on porcelain tiles on which the names of 999 additional women are inscribed in gold. Using with deliberate irony the traditional arts of women, The Dinner Party pays tribute to the feminist presence in Western culture. The exhibit has been labelled the most controversial of its time.
