THE WINNIPEG EFFECT
Galerie Buhler Gallery
St. Boniface Hospital, 409 Taché Avenue, Winnipeg
Curator: Patricia E. Bovey
The Buhler Gallery at St Boniface Hospital opened September 21, 2007 in a purpose-renovated wing of the hospital, becoming the first public art gallery in a hospital in the province and, at the time, truly one of a kind in the country. Open year-round, presenting exhibitions by professionally acclaimed Manitoba artists and with installations of its growing art collection, the Buhler Gallery has brought the visual arts to tens of thousands of people, many of whom had never before had the opportunity to experience original art.
The Buhler Gallery presents three to four exhibitions a year of the work of emerging and experienced professional artists in a curated dedicated space. For each exhibition a bilingual publication is produced. The Gallery welcomes over 15,000 visitors a year, one-third being patients, one-third staff and one-third general visitors. The audience has come from every part of Canada, the US and from each continent.
The very real generosity of Winnipeg philanthropists John and Bonnie Buhler, combined with the vision of the hospital administration, medical leadership and the St Boniface Hospital Foundation made this unique organization a reality.
In addition to the exhibitions in the gallery itself, the gallery is building a collection of Manitoba art which is presented in installations in various parts of the hospital, including an annually changing exhibition in the Administration Corridor Area, one in Cancer Care, and special exhibitions in the Mother & Child Unit and the Aboriginal Family room.
The gallery is staffed daily from its volunteer corps of more than 60 individuals who are trained for each exhibition by the Project Lead.
